Joel-Peter Witkin

The last exhibition (top floor) of the gallery (Fotografiska) was Bodies by Joel-Peter Witkin. I hadn't heard of him before and I know that I should have, I confess that I don't know of many widely known photographers and I don't really have good excuse for it. His photos are very intriguing, interesting and my mother thought that they were very provocative (not sexually) and controversial and I guess they were. The subjects in the photos were mainly of amputees and human heads, one of the photos were of a decapitated human body. Every one of the photos looked like they were from the 15th and 16th (1600-1700) century, and I would guess that some of the photos were taken with old cameras. It's incredible how he's succeeded to captivate so much life and emotion with dead bodies and body parts. Very fascinating exhibit and I'd encourage everyone to check him and it out, it's certainly not something for the squeamish but as I said, very fascinating.
